The low down on fat freezing – What is it?

Fat freezing, in scientific terms known as Cryolipolysis, is a revolutionary procedure for non-surgical fat reduction and body contouring.

The treatment was developed, interestingly, thanks to the science behind frostbite. Scientists realised that fat cells actually freeze before the skin does, leading them to develop a treatment in which you could safely freeze, and thus eliminate, fat cells, without causing any damage to the skin or surrounding tissue.

How does it work?

The pain-free and milder alternative to liposuction, fat freezing technology is applied to the chosen area of the body to kill the fat cells. It’s particularly popular with stubborn areas of fat such as the lower abdomen, the back, inner thighs and under the chin where, areas which may accumulate unwanted fat over time and are the hardest to budge with exercise and diet.

Fat cells are far more sensitive to extreme temperature than other cells (e.g. muscle, nerve or organ cells), beginning to crystallise at 4 degrees Celsius. So while fat cells are killed during Cryoskin Slimming treatments, other cells of the body remain unharmed.

A 30-minute Slimming treatment consists of a 3-phase thermal shock divided evenly across the treated areas, beginning and ending with heat at 40°C with temperatures reaching as low as -8°C in between.The rapid alternation between periods of skin warming an cooling is unique to Cryoskin which makes it superior to other cryolipolysis treatments – the heating allows the fat cells to raise to the surface which are then more effectively targeted during the following cold treatment of each area. The destroyed cells subsequently pass naturally through your body’s lymphatic system.

How to get the best results?

No major prep is required – sessions can be done during a lunch break. It is important that you do not consume any carbohydrates or sugar for at least 2 hours before and 2 hours after the treatment. This could interfere with the efficiency of the treatment. Drinking plenty of water pre and post treatment is recommended.

While results are usually seen immediately the best results appear from 15 days to 3 weeks following the treatment. Afterwards, the treatments can last for years, but it is recommended to schedule 1-2 treatments every 6 months while maintaining a healthy diet and exercise.

If you want to make sure the treatment works as well as possible, you can also combine it with a course of infrared saunas which will help remove the fat and rejuvenate the skin.
